Summer is coming, and for many that means: bags in the boot, kids in the back and off to the holiday destination. Driving electric? You might be wondering how charging abroad works. Good news: with your MobilityPlus charge card, you can charge effortlessly across Europe. And with the right preparation, charging on the road isn’t a chore, but a pleasure.
In this blog we share our best tips, and reveal how to turn every charging stop into a relaxed holiday moment.
Your MobilityPlus charge card works at more than 850,000 charge points across Europe (all EU countries, plus the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
Get ready with the MobilityPlus app: check charging locations, save your favourites and log in before you leave.
Plan longer trips with tools like ABRP or Chargemap and always double-check in the app whether your card works.
Choose your charging stops consciously and turn your waiting time into a pleasant holiday moment.
Driving a company car? Check your car policy first for reimbursement of charging abroad.
With your MobilityPlus charge card, you can charge at more than 850,000 charge points across Europe. Your card works in all EU countries, from Portugal to Finland and from Ireland to Greece, as well as in the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
Wherever you go this summer, there’s a good chance a charge point is nearby. You can find an overview of our main charging partners here too.
Before you leave, take a moment to open the MobilityPlus app. In it, you can see where to charge along the way and at your destination. Every charging station you see in the app accepts your MobilityPlus charge card.
Handy: save your favourite charging locations so you can find them again in a single tap. Also make sure the app is on your smartphone and that you’re logged in before you hit the road. You can download the app here.
For longer trips, it’s best to plan your route in advance with tools like A Better Route Planner (ABRP) or Chargemap.
One important tip: always double-check in the MobilityPlus app whether your card works at the suggested charge points. These route planners don’t yet let you indicate that you’re charging with a MobilityPlus card.
Mainly want to keep moving? Then use the ‘Speed’ filter in the app and set the minimum charging power to 50 kW or more. That way you’ll find fast chargers (DC) and keep the number of charging stops on long trips to a minimum.
Charging an electric car does take a little longer than refuelling. But who says that’s a downside? With a little planning, every charging stop becomes a pleasant part of your journey:
Food and drink: check in advance where you can grab a drink or a bite near a charge point. A terrace while your car charges sounds better than standing around waiting, right?
On the road with the kids? Look for a playground nearby, for example. The children burn off their energy while your car tops up its own, everyone’s happy.
Enjoy the moment: a nice view, a short walk or simply an ice cream in the sun. Charging then no longer feels like lost time, but a welcome break.
By choosing your stops consciously, you turn a practical necessity into an enjoyable moment. Charging really doesn’t have to be a chore, it can even become fun.
The cost of a charging session varies per charge point and per operator. In the MobilityPlus app you can easily find the rates. Pay attention to the price per kWh, any start-up costs and a possible occupancy fee on top of the energy cost. That way you’re never caught off guard.
Charging abroad, also called roaming, is technically no problem at all. Whether it’s reimbursed depends on the rules within your company car policy. A handy rule of thumb: if you couldn’t fuel up abroad at your employer’s expense before, the same probably applies to charging electricity. In doubt? Then check your car policy first.
With your MobilityPlus charge card, a well-prepared app and a handful of smart stops, you’ll set off this summer completely worry-free. Don’t let charging be a hassle, but a natural part of your holiday adventure.
